The companions behind the journey.

Some are still by my side, others live on in memory. Together, they've shaped quiet moments, difficult days, and the person behind the work.

Oscar

German Shepherd

A walking bundle of chaos powered by curiosity, bananas, and the belief that every snack belongs to him.

Oscar joined our family in May 2024, and it didn't take long for him to make himself at home. Where Fluffy was calm and thoughtful, Oscar arrived with endless energy, unstoppable curiosity, and absolutely no understanding of personal space. Life became a little louder, a little messier, and a lot more entertaining. Walks are easily his favorite part of the day, closely followed by finding absolutely anything he can chew. He's convinced every stick, slipper, cardboard box, or forgotten object deserves at least one bite before deciding whether it's worth keeping around. Sitting still has never really been his thing. Food is his greatest motivation, although he has one surprisingly unusual favorite—bananas. Somehow, he's also developed a sixth sense for snacks. It doesn't matter where he is in the house; the moment someone opens a packet of chips, Oscar appears with those impossible puppy eyes that make saying no feel almost impossible. One of my favorite memories happened during a walk when a tiny month-old puppy wandered toward us. Instead of acting like the fearless German Shepherd everyone expects, Oscar immediately panicked, turned around, and dragged me all the way back home. Watching a dog his size lose his confidence because of a puppy is still one of the funniest moments we've shared. His name also carries a little history. Years before he arrived, one of Fluffy's two puppies was named Oscar before leaving for another family. Bringing that name back felt like a small way of continuing a story that had never really ended. Every day with Oscar brings something unexpected. Whether he's making everyone laugh, demanding another walk, or convincing someone to share their snacks, he somehow turns ordinary moments into memorable ones. He's proof that chaos can feel just as much like home.

Fluffy

German Shepherd

Quiet company, selective tastes, and an expert at making difficult days feel a little lighter.

Fluffy joined our family in June 2017, just two months old. Her name wasn't planned—while everyone was trying to decide, someone casually said "Fluffy," and it immediately stuck. At that age she looked more like a little sheep than a German Shepherd, so the name somehow felt perfect. She grew into a calm but opinionated companion. Walks were her favorite part of the day, followed closely by car rides, collecting pieces of wood to chew, and claiming the bed beside me as if it had always belonged to her. Food was always on her terms too. She refused to eat until I mixed Pedigree into her bowl, no matter how long anyone else waited. She had plenty of little quirks. Fireworks always sent her searching for the safest corner in the house, and after a skin infection forced us to shave her coat, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and immediately hid. It took an entire day, plenty of reassurance, and even more treats before she believed everything was okay again. Hide and seek was another favorite. Somehow she understood the game surprisingly well and always looked genuinely proud whenever she managed to find one of us. Looking back now, what I remember most isn't any single moment—it's her constant presence. During some of the hardest periods of my life, especially while dealing with ADHD and everything that came with it, she somehow knew when simply sitting beside me was enough. She never asked for attention during those moments; she just stayed close. That quiet company often helped more than words ever could, and it's what I miss the most. She was the quiet company that asked for nothing, but gave everything.

Pico

Indian Roofed Turtle

A quiet little explorer who's been watching the world from behind a shell for nearly a decade.

Pico has been with our family for nearly a decade and has quietly become part of everyday life. Unlike the dogs, there were never loud greetings or constant demands for attention. He's always preferred observing the world at his own pace, exploring his enclosure with quiet curiosity. Over the years, we've started believing that he actually recognizes his own name. Call out "Pico," and he'll often look up or react just enough to make us wonder if he knows we're talking to him. Whether that's true or not, it's become one of those little family mysteries that makes him special. He may not be the loudest or most expressive companion in the house, but his calm presence has made him just as much a part of the family.

Zinny & Jerry

Albino rats

Two tiny explorers who turned an entire room into their playground and somehow always knew when it was snack time.

Zinny and Jerry may have been small, but they had personalities far bigger than their size. Instead of spending their lives inside a cage, they had an entire room to call home. The cage was simply where they ate and slept—the rest of the room belonged to them. Curiosity was part of who they were. Every corner had to be explored, every new object inspected, and every day brought a new little adventure. Watching them run around the room was entertainment on its own because they always seemed to be looking for something new. Food time was their favorite part of the day. Somehow, they always knew when it was coming. The moment they heard the familiar sounds, both of them would come sprinting back across the room, eager for their next meal. They also developed quite an appetite over the years. By the end, one of them had become so wonderfully round that he barely fit in a single hand anymore—a memory that's impossible not to smile about. They were only with us for two years, but they filled those years with enough curiosity, chaos, and tiny adventures to leave memories that have lasted far longer. These are the only photos we have left of Zinny & Jerry, making them some of our most treasured memories.

Sliver

Street Cat

A quiet visitor who never belonged to anyone, yet somehow became part of our daily routine.

Sliver wasn't our cat—she was a street cat who simply decided our home was worth visiting. During the months when college was still online after COVID, I was staying at my bhua's house. Almost every day, Sliver would appear around the same time, patiently waiting for her little bowl of milk. It became part of the routine. She never demanded attention, never made a fuss; she'd simply show up, enjoy her meal, spend a little time around us, and continue with whatever adventures awaited her outside. She visited us almost every day for over a month. Those short visits slowly became something we looked forward to, even though none of us ever knew where she'd been or where she disappeared to after leaving. Then, just as quietly as she had arrived, she stopped coming. We never found out what happened. Maybe she found another family to visit, maybe she wandered somewhere else, or maybe life simply took her down a different path. Whatever the reason, I still hope she's somewhere safe, happy, and being looked after. Sometimes, the companions we remember most are the ones who were only with us for a little while.
